Yes. In a common 220/380V four-wire wye system, the voltage from any phase to neutral is approximately 220V, while the voltage between two phases is approximately 380V. Some regions also use three-phase systems in which 220V is measured phase to phase. Because these configurations require different meter connections, verify the actual line-to-line voltage, line-to-neutral voltage and neutral arrangement before ordering.
On a 220/380V wye system, a 220V single-phase load is normally connected between one phase and neutral. On a 220V delta system, the phase-to-phase voltage may already be 220V, but a neutral conductor may not be available. A transformer may be required when the supply configuration does not provide the voltage needed by the load. All connections should follow local electrical codes and be completed by a qualified electrician.
The capacity depends on the metering method and the model’s rated current. Direct-connected meters commonly cover loads up to 60A, 80A or 100A per phase. Higher-current feeders normally require a CT-operated meter with correctly sized current transformers. The meter rating does not replace cable, breaker or busbar calculations, so the complete circuit must be designed for the maximum continuous load and applicable safety margin.
A three-phase meter samples the required phase voltages and currents, then calculates power and accumulated energy. For a balanced system, active power can be approximated as √3 × line voltage × line current × power factor. A multifunction meter measures each phase individually, providing more reliable results when loads are unbalanced. Correct phase sequence, CT orientation, CT ratio and voltage-terminal wiring are essential for accurate readings.
Use a three-phase four-wire meter when the system includes L1, L2, L3 and neutral, as is typical for 220/380V wye networks. A three-phase three-wire meter is intended for systems without a neutral. You must also choose between direct wiring and CT operation. Match the meter diagram to the distribution system and confirm whether the current inputs require direct conductors, paired CTs, or standard 1A or 5A CT secondaries.
Confirm the line and phase voltages, wiring configuration, maximum current, metering direction and required accuracy class. For CT models, check the CT primary and secondary ratings as well as conductor opening size. Buyers should also compare DIN-rail or panel mounting, LCD readability, RS485 Modbus or Wi-Fi connectivity, pulse outputs, bidirectional measurement, tariff functions and relevant MID, CE or IEC compliance. Installation accessories and communication modules can also affect the total price.
